Clue: A legal union involving two people

Answer: Marriage

It was almost one o’clock on Saturday when Marcus, Kevin, and I walked into our loft apartment. The Feilen cousins planned to go to their five-star hotel, Rupert on the Mark, then on to a sweep of high-dollar boutiques. Following that, cocktails at a Galleria March, a city-wide affair involving wine and finger food at a series of art galleries.

Mrs. C had gone to her place for a lie-down. Rabi had stayed at the VFW. We’d promised to meet later.

As I crossed the threshold, I let out a sigh. With just the Belden Tanner family on hand, I could relax.

I chewed on the theory that the accidents were tied to an event Rabi hadn’t been present for. That would explain why he was alive and possibly why Emerson was dead. With the next breath, I worried that if I were wrong, Rabi stood in the crosshairs of a murderer who’d killed three… possibly four times.

At the thought, two crossword grids popped into my mind. The larger puzzle was labeled Accidents. The smaller had the title of Emerson.

“I think she’s turned off.” Marcus walked up and poked me in the side. Laughing when I jumped, he sat on the sofa and pulled his laptop into position. “I turned her power button to on.”

I realized I’d only advanced halfway into the living room, a bare six feet from the front door.

Kevin walked in from the kitchen and handed me a cup of coffee in a covered travel mug. Then he stretched out on our new sofa. A multi-sectional with matching ottomans that could be configured different ways.

Kevin’s former roommate, Jimbo, had presented it to us as a wedding present. One of Jimbo’s two jobs is delivery. This sofa had a tragic encounter with a black marker thanks to a four-year-old as it was unwrapped.

The family didn’t want it. The store wouldn’t take it back. So, Kevin and I inherited our first joint piece of furniture. It cost Jimbo nothing, but that was my kind of gift. Thanks to Marcus’s artistic talents, the back of the sofa was now a fantasy scene of stark trees with flying dragons and a spaceship.

Kicking off my shoes, I sat between Kevin and Marcus. My hand trailed over the slate-blue suede like material. I sipped my coffee, relishing the dark roast flavor.

House rules. No drinking uncovered liquids on the new furniture.

I settled in with a deep sigh. “Rabi’s safe. I’m turning my brain off and taking a break.”

Kevin chuckled. “When do you ever turn you brain off?”

“You should nap.” Marcus stared at the laptop as he gestured in my direction. “You’re old and you’ve had a long day.”

Kevin rolled his eyes. “I’ll order a walker tomorrow.”

My son seemed oblivious to the sarcasm. “I’m pulling up my search results on Olsen. I don’t trust him.”

“You don’t even know him.” My tone was sharper than usual. Perhaps because of the old person comment or perhaps because I was tired and I was getting old.
